Log cabins made from Kelo wood is surely the ultimate. Kelo comes from forests within the Arctic Circle – the tree grows for between 100-300 years, then dies; it remains standing for the same period of time while all its branches and bark fall off and its sap drains away into the ground. The result is a super hard and dry wood, with exactly the right properties for traditional Finnish sauna. Kelo log cabins are unique to Finnish Lapland, where they are hand-built by skilled craftsmen. Each cabin has its own character, and once in place will almost certainly survive longer than an equivalent brick structure. |
